Our March blog series will take a closer look at Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Together, letโ€™s explore the ways that ACEs CASAโ€™s volunteer Advocates have a profound impact on the children they serve, providing them with hope for a brighter future

ACEs Can Be Hard to Recognize

Every child reacts differently to trauma. Many children who experience ACEs do not show immediate signs of distress. They may seem to thrive in school, interact normally with family and friends, and show no visible indicators of emotional struggle. However, beneath the surface, they may be dealing with emotional and psychological challenges. Unlike physical injuries, the scars from ACEs are often hidden and harder to detect.

Over time, these hidden scars may surface in various ways, especially during stressful moments. Though a child may not visibly show signs of trauma, they might experience depression, anxiety, or anger. These feelings can emerge suddenly, confusing those around them.

Identifying ACEs Early

Recognizing ACEs early is critical. It allows caregivers, educators, and CASA Advocates to intervene and offer vital support. The sooner trauma signs are spotted, the faster the child can receive the help they need to heal.

Itโ€™s essential to watch both verbal and non-verbal cues. Children often struggle to express their emotions with words. Instead, they communicate through body language, facial expressions, and actions. These subtle signs can reveal a lot about what a child may be feeling.

How CASA Advocates Make a Difference

Children who have experienced ACEs benefit from the support of CASAโ€™s trained Advocates. These Advocates are skilled at recognizing signs of trauma. As they consistently engage with the child, they understand the child’s unique emotional and behavioral responses. This deeper connection enables them to offer support that directly addresses the child’s needs. By prioritizing the child’s well-being, CASA ensures that the child receives the care and advocacy necessary to overcome challenges and build a better future.

At Henrico CASA, we are committed to advocating for children who have experienced ACEs, offering them support and guidance. By raising awareness and learning together we can help break the cycle of trauma and create a brighter future for the children in our community. Stay tuned this month as we continue to explore how ACEs impact children and the vital role, we all play in their recovery. Learn more in our upcoming March information session on March 26th!
