The start of a new year offers us all a chance to reflect. It is a time to look back on our experiences, and how they have shaped and prepared us for the year ahead.

Throughout January, we will hear from a few of our newly sworn-in Advocates about their life experiences, what led them to Henrico CASA, and the guidance they have for those who are considering becoming an Advocate in 2025.

Becoming an Advocate begins with a comprehensive training. The training provides a solid foundation that shapes and guides CASA Advocates, equipping them with the knowledge and skillset to make informed decisions for every child’s future.

What was the most impactful part of the Advocate training?

When asked about the most impactful part of their training process, our newest Advocates answered:

“What stuck with me was how prevalent abuse and neglect cases were. It definitely pushed me to keep going so that I can be a small player in making some real change.”- Shakia Lane

“What stuck with me the most in training was the seminar I participated in during the mandatory meeting. It was very eye opening being in many families’ reality. So many emotions and feelings.”-Deshawnda Johnson

“This is not your average volunteer assignment. This work can be challenging, depressing, and gut wrenching, but I must remember one trainer said, “We cannot fix families!”- Ethel Hayes

“The diversity of past experiences and personalities of my fellow CASA trainees was impressive! This stuck with me during training and after, because it encouraged me in the moments when I doubted, I was “qualified”. I learned that there is no particular educational background or career experience necessary, just a willingness to learn and be of service.”- Amy Ringberg
