The start of a new year offers us all a chance to reflect. It is a time to look back on our experiences. And to look how they have shaped and prepared us for the year ahead.

Throughout January, we will hear from a few of our newly sworn-in Advocates. They will speak on their life experiences, what led them to Henrico CASA, and the guidance they have for those who are considering becoming an Advocate in 2025.

Becoming an Advocate is a life-changing opportunity for both the advocate and the children that they serve. CASA Advocates provide a voice for children who are often not heard; help to guide them through the legal system, and advocate for their best interests. Our new Advocates anticipate that this role will bring both a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Here’s what they are looking forward to most:

What are you most looking forward to about being a CASA Advocate?

“I am most looking forward to being involved at a level that has the potential to really make a difference in the lives of the children and families I serve.”- Amy Ringberg

“I’m most looking forward to the court hearings. It intrigues me since it isn’t public and only a select few have knowledge and experience of how cases play out in a real court room rather than what we see on TV.”-Shakia Lane

“Interacting with the child/children. Having a safe space with the volunteers and the wonderful staff at the CASA office.”- Ethel Hayes

“I am most looking forward to the endless opportunities to make a difference in many lives.”-Deshawnda Johnson

“Become a trusted adult to children in the mist of confusion is what I look forward to the most. Being there to simply listen and engage with them can have such a huge impact on their lives during such trying times.”-Ajanee Ransom
