The start of a new year offers us all a chance to reflect. It is a time to look back on our experiences, and how they have shaped and prepared us for the year ahead.
Throughout January, we will hear from a few of our newly sworn-in Advocates about their life experiences, what led them to Henrico CASA, and the guidance they have for those who are considering becoming an Advocate in 2025.
For our last January blog, we asked Advocates to reflect on advice they want to share with those who are considering becoming an Advocate in the new year.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming an Advocate?
“I would tell someone thinking about being a CASA to just DO IT! The impact you will make on many lives will be priceless as well as the relationship and bonds you may make.”-Deshawnda Johnson
“Volunteering? This type of volunteer work is simply not for individuals who have unhealed childhood or adulthood traumas. This type of volunteer work is not for the easily persuaded individual, or the timid shy person.” – Ethel Hayes
“I would say to someone to really speak with your support system about how they can support you. If you set yourself up well on the front end, they will know exactly where they are needed when the time comes.” -Shakia Lane
“Even though becoming an Advocate is a volunteer position, it is a very impactful and important role to children in need. You can become that consistent trusted adult in children’s life during a tough time.”-Ajanee Ransom
“JUST DO IT… go through the training! Dip your toe in the water and see if you want to go for a swim. After training, you can make an informed decision about committing to the role.”- Amy Ringberg
