Defining Success as an Advocate

Success is commonly defined as “the degree or measure” of something turning out well. This April, we are exploring the theme of success and examining what it looks like from various unique perspectives at Henrico CASA.

Success can be a layered concept, especially in roles where the outcomes are not immediately tangible. As a CASA Advocate, success takes on a much deeper and more meaningful dimension. Amy Ringberg, who was sworn in as an Advocate in November 2024, quickly adapted her understanding of success for this role. Now working on her second case, she shares personal insights into how her definition of success has evolved as she navigates this impactful work.

Understanding the Role of an Advocate

CASA Advocates serve as the voice for children involved in the court system. They work closely with youth who are navigating complex situations, advocating for their rights, needs, and hopes. An Advocate’s primary mission is to ensure that the child they serve is heard. Amy emphasized that her role is not about striving toward a singular, clear-cut outcome. Success, she believes, comes as small building blocks, developed through consistent effort and ongoing dedication.

The Power of Small Wins

When asked how she measures success, Amy said it’s not always about grand gestures: Success isn’t a dramatic moment. It’s the small steps. This emphasis on small, often unseen progress is a hallmark of CASA’s advocacy work. It’s not about finding one clear solution to what are often complicated, interrelated problems. Instead, it’s about being there consistently on behalf of a child, offering a steady presence that makes a lasting impact over time.

Growth in Advocacy

Advocacy is not always about achieving a perfect outcome; it’s about the lessons learned along the way. For Amy, it’s a continuous process of reflection and improvement. “If you’re not asking yourself how you can do it better next time, you’re missing the growth that comes from this work,” she says.

Each case presents new challenges and opportunities for growth, pushing her to refine her approach and deepen her understanding. Success, for Amy, is not just about the immediate impact, but about the ongoing evolution of her skills, insights, and ability to make a difference in the lives of those she advocates for.
