Success is commonly defined as “the degree or measure” of something turning out well. This April, we are exploring the theme of success and examining what it looks like from various unique perspectives at Henrico CASA.

From the perspective of staff Volunteer Coordinator Stacy Willer, our success is truly measured by the personal connection and dedication of our Advocates who drive our mission forward.

A Journey to Henrico CASA: Connecting Past Experience to a Passion for Advocate Support

Stacy’s path to Henrico CASA was fueled by her passion for supporting others, especially those in vulnerable situations. Before joining Henrico CASA, Stacy ran a live-in recovery program for women; many of whom were working towards regaining the custody of their children. In that role, she frequently worked with CASA Advocates, and it became clear how important their work was in regard to supporting families. When Stacy relocated to Virginia and saw the open position at Henrico CASA, it felt like the perfect opportunity to combine her experience in volunteer management with her commitment to advocating for children and families.

“I love supporting volunteers, building them up, and being on a mission together,” Stacy shares. Her previous experience has shown her the power of having a dedicated support system, and that is what she strives to offer to the Advocates she manages on her team.

It’s About Impact

As a Volunteer Coordinator, Stacy measures success through the stories of Advocates and the children and families they serve. “One of the primary ways I measure success of a CASA Advocate is by how they feel at the end of the case,” Stacy explains. “Even if the case did not go how CASA recommended, do the Advocates still feel like they made a difference?” Stacy’s definition of success doesn’t end with the closure of a case.  A key indicator of success for her is when an Advocate is willing to take on another case. “If the Advocate feels supported and valued enough to continue volunteering, that’s success!”

Building Relationships

A large part of Stacy’s role as a Volunteer Coordinator is supporting the Advocates she works with every day. Whether it is joining an Advocate on a visit with the child or assisting with obtaining records, her approach is rooted in teamwork: No Advocate does their role alone. This makes every milestone in a case feel like a shared achievement.

Stacy’s dedication to her group of Advocates ensures they feel empowered to do the important work of advocating for children in need. And in doing so, she helps themo truly changes lives.
