Supporting Kinship Caregivers
As we continue to acknowledge National Kinship Care Month, it’s important to recognize the vital role kinship caregivers play by stepping in during times of need to provide children with safety and stability.
While kinship care offers many benefits to children, it can also present challenges for the caregivers themselves. Recognizing and responding to these is crucial to ensure that both children and their caregivers can thrive.
How Our Community Can Support Kinship Caregivers
There are many meaningful ways to offer your support to kinship caregivers, including the following:
- Financial Support– Donate clothing, diapers, school supplies, or monetary contributions.
- Emotional Support- Connect them with local support groups or counseling resources. Sometimes, simply checking in and offering a listening ear can make a big difference.
- Lend Your Time– Offer practical help such as tutoring, transportation, or childcare support. Small acts of service can relieve stress and help kinship families maintain balance.
- Share Resources– Help connect kinship caregivers with the resources they made need by directing them to Virginia’s Kinship Resource Guide (link to https://kinshipvirginia.com/#gsc.tab=0)
- Become a CASA Volunteer Advocate
Volunteer with Henrico CASA to advocate for children living kinship care. By sharing your time and concern, you can help ensure that families receive the support they need to succeed.
Let’s Work Together
This National Kinship Care Month let’s stand united in support of the biological and fictive kin who are quietly doing some of the hardest and most important work. No matter how you choose to support, your efforts matter. Every action, big or small, helps create a stronger, more compassionate community where kinship caregivers and the children in their care are seen, valued, and supported.
