Each May, communities across the country recognize Foster Care Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness, share stories, and advocate for children and youth experiencing foster care. At Henrico CASA, this month serves as an important reminder of the impact consistent support and advocacy can have on a child’s life.

Children in foster care often face challenges far beyond what many people realize. Frequent moves, changes in schools, family separation, and uncertainty can make it difficult for children to feel stable and supported. Many youth are navigating trauma while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy in their everyday lives.

The Strength in Small Moments

That is why CASA Advocates matter.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are trained community volunteers who advocate for the best interests of children involved in the child welfare system. Through regular contact and relationship-building, volunteers become a consistent presence for the children they serve — someone who listens, supports, and ensures their voice is heard.

At Henrico CASA, volunteers work closely with children, families, attorneys, teachers, and service providers to help ensure each child’s needs are recognized both inside and outside of the courtroom. Whether advocating for educational support, mental health services, stability in placements, or simply checking in on a child’s well-being, CASA volunteers help children feel seen and valued during difficult transitions.

Foster Care Awareness Month also shines a light on the experiences of teenagers in foster care. Older youth often face additional challenges as they prepare for adulthood, sometimes without the consistent support systems many young adults rely on. Guidance, encouragement, and trusted adult connections can make a meaningful difference as youth navigate school, employment, housing, and future goals.

This month, Henrico CASA encourages our community to learn more about foster care, advocate for children and families, and consider ways to get involved. Raising awareness helps strengthen support for the children and youth in our community who need it most.

Together, we can help ensure every child has a voice, a champion, and the opportunity to thrive.
