The start of a new year offers us all a chance to reflect. It is a time to look back on our experiences, and how they have shaped and prepared us for the year ahead.
Throughout January, we will hear from a few of our newly sworn-in Advocates about their life experiences, what led them to Henrico CASA, and the guidance they have for those who are considering becoming an Advocate in 2025.
Why become a CASA Advocate?
People volunteer to serve as CASA Advocates for a variety of reasons. Some are seeking to learn about the legal system or grow professional skills. Others are motivated by faith, family, or compassion. Still others draw upon their past experiences, wanting to pay a kindness forward.
When asked to share their motivations, members of our newest cohort of Advocates explained:
“I am at a great stage in my life as I no longer have competing tasks such as work, children, and self-care that previously dictated my day to day. This opportunity is a wonderful chance to use the many skills that I have learned over the years in an area that I find rewarding and challenging.”- Ethel Hayes
“I chose to become a CASA because I want to be a part of the change I wish to come, to be a voice for the sometime voiceless and to be a that sunshine after the rain.”- Deshawnda Johnson
“For me becoming an advocate was the “sweet spot“. I can still give children a voice without being a lawyer.”- Ajanee Ransom
“I was interested in volunteering my time doing something that was substantial, meaningful, and that would challenge me. This does that in spades!”- Amy Ringberg
