As we wrap up our summer blog series exploring films that speak to the heart of our work at Henrico CASA, I wanted to highlight a film that feels like a warm invitation and echoes the values we embrace at Henrico CASA: Won’t You Be My Neighbor?  This warm and thoughtful documentary about Fred Rogers offers a reminder of the simple yet profound power of empathy, authenticity, and unwavering commitment to children’s wellbeing.  These are qualities that, I believe, reflect the very best of what we strive to bring to every child and family we serve.

Reflections

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, directed by Morgan Neville, is a lovely tribute to Fred Rogers, the gentle soul behind Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.  While his cardigan collection may have raised a few eyebrows, there is no denying the warmth and sincerity he wore with every one of them.  Through interviews, old footage, and Fred’s own voice, the film explores how he worked to create a safe and welcoming space for children to feel seen, heard, and valued.  His quiet, steady presence was a lifeline for so many, teaching generations of children about kindness, understanding, and the importance of treating every person with dignity.

For me, this documentary is a timely reflection of what we see every day in the work of our staff, our board members, and most especially our dedicated CASA volunteers.  Just like Fred Rogers, our team shows up in children’s lives as calm, steady figures.  They take the time to listen, to affirm a child’s worth, and to offer a safe harbor during uncertain times.  They remind children that their voices matter and that they deserve to be met with care and understanding.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? also speaks to the broader culture we nurture at CASA — a place where everyone is invited in, where every story is honored, and where we believe in the transformative power of a caring adult.  While the film is likely a fitting nod to nostalgia for many of us, it should also serve as a timeless reminder of our shared values.  It underscores the quiet strength of advocacy, the power of empathy, and the healing that comes from showing up with our whole hearts.

After a year of celebrating 30 years of Henrico CASA and all the milestones we have reached together, I am inspired by how our community has carried forward this spirit of kindness and care.  Fred Rogers once said, “Anyone who does anything to help a child in this life is a hero to me.”

To all our advocates, staff, supporters, and friends — you are those heroes, and I am honored to walk alongside you in this mission.
