The start of a new school year can be an emotional rollercoaster for any child. For some, it’s a time of excitement; reuniting with friends, exploring new subjects, and stepping into new opportunities. For others, especially children who have experienced trauma, the thought of returning to the classroom can bring anxiety, uncertainty, or even fear.
Unique Challenges
For children being served by Henrico CASA, the back-to-school season can be particularly complex. Many of these children face challenges that are more complicated than the typical jitters of a new school year. Changes in living situations or separation from family can make the return to school feel overwhelming. Even small tasks, like packing a backpack or meeting a new teacher, can carry added stress when a child is navigating so many stressors outside the classroom environment.
This is where CASA’s volunteer Advocates step in. Our volunteer Advocates provide consistent support, helping children feel seen, heard, and safe. We prepare children for transitions by talking through what to expect, navigating their fears, and encouraging them to express their feelings. This support translates to greater confidence, improved focus, and the ability to engage both socially and academically in the classroom.
How CASA Advocates Support Children
Advocates recognize that every child’s reaction to returning to school is valid: excitement, nervousness, or fear are all natural responses. Henrico CASA’s Advocates recognizes these feelings, offering guidance and stability so children can approach school with confidence. Whether it’s celebrating small wins, helping a child navigate a difficult day, or connecting families with resources, CASA makes the transition smoother and less intimidating.
As students across Henrico County head back to class this week, let’s ensure every child has the emotional and practical support they need to succeed. Because every child deserves a strong start to the school year. Together, we can make that happen.
Join our August 27th info session at noon to learn how you can volunteer as a CASA Advocate and make a lasting difference in a child’s life. Your time, care, and commitment could be exactly what a child needs to thrive this school year!
