School is meant to be a place where children feel safe to discover, learn, and flourish. Yet, for many children served by Henrico CASA, the challenges of instability and trauma can impede their academic success.
The Impact of Instability on Learning
Without stable support, many children find themselves struggling to stay on track academically, navigating school with added burdens that no child should face alone. CASA’s volunteer Advocates fill a critical gap by providing a steady, trusted presence who not only listens, but actively works to remove obstacles and connect children with the resources they need to thrive.
Volunteer Advocates play a vital role in supporting children through these difficulties. They act as consistent, caring adults who listen and advocate for each child’s educational needs. CASAs work closely with teachers, counselors, families, and social workers to make sure children get the resources and stability necessary for success.
Some of the ways Advocates support academic progress include:
Connecting to Resources: They make recommendations in court reports to support children in accessing counseling, special education services, or other resources tailored to meet their individual needs.
Bridging Communication: Advocates serve as a link between the child’s home, school, and support systems to coordinate efforts around the child’s academic goals.
Building Confidence: By offering encouragement, Advocates help children develop resilience and a positive attitude toward learning.
At Henrico CASA, we believe that every child deserves the chance to succeed academically and build a future full of hope and opportunity. And studies show that when CASA is involved, children have better academic outcomes. They are less likely to be suspended, more likely to pass classes, and display improved behaviors in the classroom!
If you’re passionate about making a meaningful difference in a child’s life, consider volunteering as a CASA Advocate in Henrico County. Join us for an upcoming information session on August 27th to learn more about how you can support children in our community this school year and beyond!
