As students return to school, educators and community members play a vital role in more than just academic success, they help create safe environments where children can thrive. For children experiencing abuse, neglect, or overwhelming stress, school may be the only stable part of their day. That’s why it’s so important for all community members to stay alert and informed so that these children do not get overlooked.

Everyone Has a Role in Prevention

Creating a safer school year for all children starts with awareness, compassion, and action. Whether you’re an educator, neighbor, or someone who interacts with children in your daily life, you can make a difference by staying informed and involved.

Learn the Signs

Children who are experiencing abuse or neglect often don’t have the words to explain what’s happening to them. And not all signs are visible. While some children may show physical symptoms, many more express their pain through behavior and emotions. Look for:

Behavioral Changes: Sudden withdrawal, anxiety, aggression, or fearfulness, especially around certain adults

Verbal Cues: A child talking about violence at home, feeling unsafe, or being left alone for long periods

Physical Signs: Unexplained bruises, burns, or other injuries and wearing off-season clothing to potentially cover injuries.

Supporting Families Under Stress

Children may have a difficult time at school because they are distracted by what is happening at home. Many families in our community face overwhelming challenges like poverty, housing instability, addiction, mental health struggles, or lack of social support. When stress builds without relief, it increases the risk of neglect or unsafe conditions for children.

You can help by:

Sharing Resources: Connect families to food pantries, counseling services, or housing assistance.

Listening Without Judgment: Sometimes, just being a safe, understanding person to talk to can relieve a parent’s stress.

Being Present: Offer a ride, a meal, or help navigating school systems or services. Small acts of support can have a big impact.

At Henrico CASA, we believe every child deserves a safe, stable childhood where they can learn and grow. Our volunteer Advocates are working behind the scenes in homes and the courtroom to give children that ideal childhood and help them do their best at school. And it’s making a difference! Children with a CASA are reported to have improved behavior at school and be more likely to pass their classes and avoid suspension. These are key indicators for academic success and personal achievement!
