As we continue to acknowledge National Kinship Care Month, it’s important to recognize the impact that kinship care has on the lives of both children and their families. While all foster care is designed to provide safety and stability, kinship care offers a unique blend of familiarity, cultural connection, and emotional security that can make all the difference for a child.
Kinship care doesn’t just keep a child safe: it keeps them connected.
Kinship Care Strengthens Identity and Belonging
When children are placed with relatives or close family friends, they are far more likely to stay connected to the people, places, and traditions that shape their sense of identity. Whether it’s attending the same school or celebrating familiar holidays, these small but powerful pieces of continuity offer reassurance during a time of great upheaval.
Kinship Care Promotes Healing, Not Just Safety
When a child is removed from their home, it is a form of trauma. Children enter the child welfare system after experiencing trauma. Kinship caregivers often already have emotional bonds with the child, which can create a sense of safety and trust from the very beginning of placement.
This familiar environment can support:
- Healthier emotional development
- Stronger attachment and relational trust
- Reduced feelings of loss and abandonment
In many cases, kinship placements also make it easier for children to maintain contact with their parents and siblings.
Kinship Care Creates Opportunities for Reunification
While not all families are able to reunite, kinship care is often an effective step towards family reunification. Kinship caregivers can maintain communication with the child’s parents, attend court hearings or family visits, and encourage consistent, safe contact when appropriate.
In many ways, kinship care helps keep the door open for families to heal and sometimes reunite if it is safe to do so.
At Henrico CASA, our volunteer Advocates often play a key role in identifying potential kinship caregivers, advocating for supportive placements, and connecting families with resources. Whether it’s helping a child understand their new living arrangement or ensuring that a kin caregiver gets access to services, CASA Advocates help strengthen the entire family system.
