This summer, we’re rolling out something new at Henrico CASA: a film review series that dives into stories reflecting the heart of our mission. Our team will be sharing their takes on movies that spotlight the realities, challenges, and resilience we witness in our work with children and families. Each film – unique like every case we serve – serves as a reminder of why children need CASA Advocates… and why CASA needs YOU. So grab some popcorn and join us!

This week, Sydney shares her thoughts on the film “Matilda.”

Matilda is based on a book that details the story of Matilda Wormwood. She’s a highly intelligent child that is left to fend for herself due to the neglect of her family. She relies on educating herself through reading books during her life. It demonstrates all forms of neglect: educational, emotional, physical, and medical.

Through watching this movie again, as an adult, it only further emphasizes the necessity for a trusted adult in a child’s life. This is demonstrated with relationship between Matilda and Miss Honey. Matilda is able to thrive with Miss Honey’s advocacy for her. By the end of the film, Matilda is adopted by Miss Honey, and there is a “happy” ending where Matilda is able to reach her own potential.

Matilda makes me reflect on the importance of a CASA in children’s lives. A CASA can be a catalyst for changing the trajectory of a child’s future.

I read the book and watch the movie multiple times growing up. I’m not sure if this early exposure to it made me realize how much passion that I have for child advocacy, and having children heard. As one of our Henrico County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court (JDR Court) Judge’s says “One courtroom, one child.”

This can be the same as CASA’s work. One child, one CASA.
